Watch To See What 5 Seconds of Wait Time Actually Looks Like

By Mackenzie Shiba M.S. CCC-SLP

Check out this video of me working with my sweet client. I had sung this particular song at least 5 times before my first long pause.

I always advise families to add in at least 5 seconds of wait time after modeling a phrase or word a few times. This is to give an opportunity for the child to communicate their own message in whatever mode is most efficient for them (E.g., oral speech , gestures, sounds, AAC, actions).

I encourage you to practice pausing this week to sit back and let your child lead a bit! Respond to their communication attempts, but make sure you're giving them time and space.

We can model language on a regular basis, but if we're not allowing time for pausing, our children may not get a chance to try out what they've learned :)
