Natural Language Acquisition (NLA)
What is Natural Language Acquisition?
Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) is a framework that describes how gestalt language processors learn to communicate. These are children who naturally use scripts or echolalia, meaning they repeat phrases they've heard in movies, books, or from people around them. These scripts aren’t “just copying”, they’re meaningful building blocks for communication.
NLA therapy supports kids as they move through the six stages of gestalt language development—starting with memorized phrases and moving toward self-generated, flexible language.

NLA is designed for gestalt language processors. These are children who often:
Repeat long phrases or exact lines from shows, songs, or books
Use scripts to express a range of emotions or needs (even if the words don’t match the moment)
May not yet combine individual words spontaneously
This approach is especially helpful for children with autism, but it’s also used with any child who communicates using scripts or echolalia.

We start by listening closely to your child’s scripts to understand what they’re trying to communicate. Then, we:
Validate and acknowledge their current language (no “stop scripting” here!)
Offer new language models based on their current stage of development
Use meaningful, connection-driven activities to help them move from echolalia to flexible, original speech
Partner with families so you feel confident responding to and supporting your child’s communication at home
It’s not about “fixing” how they talk, it’s about honoring how they process language and helping them build communication that works for them.

Why does NLA Matter?
For gestalt language processors, traditional language therapy can miss the mark. NLA provides individuals the appropriate support at the right time, without pushing them to communicate in ways that feel unnatural. By embracing their scripts and guiding them through the natural developmental stages, we help them feel understood, connected, and truly heard on their terms.
