  • Individuals who have a diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Signs of CAS include:

    • Not saying the words the same way each time

    • Inappropriate stress on syllables or words, intonation sounds different

    • Sound distortions, especially with vowel sounds

    • Short words may sound better than longer words or sentences

    • Limited speech sound inventory

  • Dynamic ongoing assessment, touch prompts when appropriate, visual cues, and use of the Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing hierarchy. The speech-language pathologist will support the child in planning the movements needed to say sounds and ensure accurate movements in speech. For some children, Augmentative and Alternative Communication may also be considered in accompaniment of working on oral speech.

Why does Apraxia Therapy Matter?

Traditional articulation and speech sound therapy are not the best approaches for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. A motor-based approach is pertinent to obtaining optimal outcomes.
